What is Acupuncture, what can I expect?

What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine has been successfully practiced for more than 4,000 years.  It encompasses acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, Chinese herbology, and Chinese massage (Tui Na).

How does Acupuncture work?

Human bodies are complex.  In TCM, we consider the body to be a complex web of interconnecting and crossing channels.  Health problems occur when there is an imbalance within these channels, causing a blockage that is often felt as pain.  In acupuncture, specific points are chosen to help the body recognize this blockage, in order to regain its natural balance and circulation.

Is Acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is safe when practiced by a licenced practitioner through BC’s governing body CTCMA.  These practitioners adhere to regulated rules and guidelines for clean needle technique. Acupuncture needles are pre-sterilized, individually packaged, and disposable.

Does Acupuncture hurt?

When performed by a licensed practitioner, acupuncture should not hurt.  You may feel an internal sensation, such as a pressure, warmth, or tingling.  When performed correctly, an acupuncture treatment should be comfortable and relaxing.

What can I expect?

Upon arrival, you will be required to sign a consent form and fill out a general information form, which will outline past medical history and identify the main complain.

During the initial consultation, you will spend about 30 minutes discussing the main complaint and general body conditions.  You will be given a custom TCM diagnosis and treatment plan prior to any acupuncture treatment. An acupuncture treatment will typically last between 30-60 minutes.
